A place for your stories
CAUBO has created this special page on our website where you can share your stories, memories, and anecdotes about your experiences with CAUBO throughout our history. Send your stories to info@caubo.ca and we will post them here for all of our members to enjoy.
A videographer will also be available at the reception preceding the President’s Dinner at this year’s Annual Conference, so members can capture their CAUBO stories and memories on video. The videos will be posted here as well.
"I have been a member of the CAUBO community for 24 years and during that time I have attended all but one CAUBO conference. The conference provides a tremendous opportunity to connect with your colleagues across the country and develop a relationship with them. Canadian Universities survive by sharing their Best Practices. For many years I worked at Memorial University and without the benefit of the web to access the policies of another institution, I had to rely on creating these relationships so that my University could benefit from the work of others. For many years my greatest resource was Bob White, the CFO from the University of Toronto. I would call him up and say “hi, this is Trudy, the Little Fish from Memorial in Newfoundland, calling upon Bob the Big Fish at the University of Toronto.” Bob was always a gentleman and would share his many policies and procedures with me so that we had a starting point for projects that we were working on. Bob and I became really good friends and eventually served on the CAUBO Board together. We also became dart partners and would play in the annual dart tournament together. This was the only time either of us would play darts and one year we were the runners-up at the tournament. Since his retirement many years ago and my move to the Toronto area we have remained friends and continue to share emails on a regular basis."

“Although much work is accomplished at CAUBO’s annual conferences, the social events are remembered the best and add to our enjoyment. One event involved a bus ride from London to see a Shakespeare play in Stratford. The gracious event organizers made sure that each passenger was given a bottle of wine at the beginning of the trip which was dutifully used to wash down the travelling snacks that were also provided. After a bottle of wine, a bus ride, and a visit to the hospitality tents before the play, more than one delegate pulled a "Homer Simpson" (head back and snoring) before we got to Act II.
Also, travelling from the west coast to some of the eastern universities was always a challenge when the early wake-up call came for the golf tournament. The bus leaving at 6 a.m. meant getting up at 5:30 or before, and with the time change it was like rising at 1:30 a.m. to go golfing! As I had also supported the darts tournament the night before, it meant that the early morning conversations on the bus were not too snappy.”

"I recall with great pleasure the experience that the Organizing Committee at MUN had when we hosted CAUBO’s annual conference in 1994. We had such positive feedback from everyone across the country. They were amazed that we were able to arrange perfect weather for the whole conference. I kept telling everyone that it was a reflection of our ability to really stretch the budget. We were able to have Great Big Sea entertain us as they were just about to get their big break nationally. We also provided a Dory (fishing boat) loaded with lobsters which were served over dry ice to the group. The CAUBO President of the day, Terry Falconer from the University of Manitoba, was so excited as a Westerner to be able to eat lobster that he ate seven lobsters in one sitting."
